PREPARE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Building Community and Meeting Needs Through Disaster Readiness in Neighborhoods

Research shows that, in a real emergency, local first responders are overwhelmed and neighbors turn to neighbors for help. In order to effectively save property and lives, neighborhoods should prepare.

CPC in conjunction with Fire District #6 and the Pacific Biodiversity Institute created a map of the Methow Valley with 64 designated “Neighborhoods.” Click here for list of neighborhoods and the overall map of the Methow Valley. A link to individual Methow neighborhood maps can be found by scrolling down at Neighborhood Map Links. (** Please notify us if you have a problem with this link.)

Many of these “neighborhoods” cover rather large geographic areas. However, when organizing a neighborhood, the ideal size is 10 – 20 households. Once you have identified your neighborhood geographically, look to your own area to decide who should be best to involve in your efforts that you could easily reach in a disaster. Perhaps it’s 20 households or perhaps it's only three. Do what makes sense. Something is better than nothing. The difference between being only 3% prepared and 0% prepared is huge.

Many useful tools to prepare your neighborhood for emergencies can be found on our Emergency Resources page, including mapping instruction, a tutorial, checklists and links to other web resources.

Finally, please let us know if you choose to become a neighborhood leader and organize your neighborhood in the event of an emergency. CPC and Okanogan Emergency Management are keeping a ready list for use by Aero Methow and our local fire districts. Many times local first responders are overwhelmed with calls asking them to check on individuals when a simple house call from a neighbor would suffice. Having a list of designated Neighborhood Leaders to make house calls in as many Methow neighborhoods as possible would conserve critical resources needed elsewhere in a true disaster.
